Having a bit of a wifi problem with my cousins laptop connecting at very low speeds recently, I could not find the answer on her machine.

Today, while the family went to church...and no machine was in use, I fired up my laptop (same model as hers...HP M2000, WinXPH) and received a low signal also...3 feet from the router...11 Mbps. Turned off the router for 2 or 3 minutes, powered it back on..and walah, 54 Mbps...

NOW... I discovered a new app icon on the desktop (I use a folder to keep desktop icons from cluttering up the wallpaper, etc) So...this new icon stood out like a sore thumb.

It is named Genelink 1.11A, (Target USB File Transfer 1.11A) with an install date of July 12 2008. That is really weird because this laptop has not been turned on since mid July!, and I certainly have not D/L or installed this app. It has a mod date of Dec. 28, 2001.

I did Google this thing, and it seems to be a legit application for file transfers and sharing printers, etc...all well and good, except for the fact that I have no need for file sharing or printing abilities from this laptop...I have it strickly for email if I am confined to my bedroom from illness etc.

Could this application be a hackers tool as well as a legit user program?..

Comments welcome..tnx

You sure its not a usb network link cable ? It would include software .

Nope, the only USB item used on my lappy is a mouse! Plus, I don't do file transfers between machines...always do those the "hard way" by CD...which only occur when I am setting up another machine and need some of my archived stuff.

The laptop stays in a dresser drawer in my bedroom, where it has been for several months. I "remember" checking mail with it back in July (I think) when I was down a couple of days...that's it. I had to charge the battery this morning before it would boot properly.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention...the app does not show up in the add/remove programs. It does show up in the start > programs menu, but there is no uninstall feature.

Kinda odd, don't you think?

Yea, it odd. Could be someone accessed the laptop via the usb link cable. I would look for an uninstall file in its directory just for security measures.

Check the event logs for any info.

You could try something like Revo uninstaller to get rid of the app. Otherwise, delete the files and search the registry for genelink entries.

Thanks all...guess I best get it off the machine..

I will get a copy of Revo...that sounds like a good extra utility to have a copy of..

WOW!!

I like this application.

The setup to uninstall a program is very outlined and if you can read, you can't (hardly) make a mistake.

It also appears to 'go get' all of the setup dll's, where ever they are.

I could have used this one several years ago trying to get rid of one of the Zone Alarm upgrades...that didn't work. It was necessary to edit the registry prior to deleting certain ZA Dll's!

Thanks all!!

I own GeneLink and indeed it is used for transfering files from one computer to another. I think while you were not there SOMEONE tried to transfer files OUT of your laptop. I descovered today that it doesn't support Vista.

This software just doesn't install itself ,,, just a thought
