The thing hangs after PnP detect for several minutes with the hard disk LED on steady. Also displays message saying detecting secondary IDE master CD-ROM. Also does something similar when shutting down and won't turn off automatically when I shut down Windows.

This is very annoying and wastess a lot of time. It also tells me every time I boot up that something's wrong with my pc. Please give me any suggestions!

I would check all your cables are pluged in all the way and make sure all your add on cards and memery are installed in there slots all the way
also what bios version are you using might try updating the bios http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
also go into bios and have it load bios defalts see if that helps http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Thanks for the assist. Loading BIOS defaults is a great idea.

Some results:

- Setting CMOS to BIOS defaults speeds up pause a little bit - to a reasonable 5 seconds

I think this means that there's a problem with my drives and UDMA-33 or multiple-sector transfers.

- I looked in Device Manager in Safe Mode and found multiples of drives and system devices - tried to clean those up. Of course this has nothing to do with the original problem.

- Now the **** thing reboots every time I try to shut down. I don't have a clue, except maybe power management.

delete every instance of muilitple devices in device manager i delete all the devices and let it reinstall them all
also try getting to latest bus master drivers and agp drivers etc etc from asus's web site for the P5A mobo
also make sure your not useing the power managment fitures in bios disable all the power management in there.

Also what version of windows are you using and do you have all the update for it ?

Something simple...try disconnecting the cable to the CD Drive and boot up. See if that helps. Just wondering if is on it's way out.

Thank you both! I am using pm in BIOS - I'll turn it off. Disconnecting the CD-ROM and if necessary the hard disks would find out if it's one of them that's causing the problem. So until I do that I should reserve my opinion about more complicated problems. Thanks again! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
