So today I got two e-mails from my university, one a "Williamsburg Crime Alert" the other an "Important Safety Message." There have been 2 abductions of a female this month in our sleepy "Colonial" town. So, the school is telling us to stay safe and don't walk alone at night. Yet, the school policy (NB: NOT the law, this is just the school's internal policy) is that even though I have a state issued permit to carry a concealed handgun, I cannot have one on campus. I can't even have one in a locked safe in the locked trunk of my car if my car is on campus. Briliant

Huh? I'm in grad school. I don't live on campus. The campus I attend classes on is separate from the rest of the school, so there is no reason a teenager have access to my gun. Anyways, if a gun is concealed and on my person, who the heck is going to commit suicide with it?

It's not about thinking you're Dirty Harry. It's about realizing that you are responsible for your own safety. I don't know about the UK, but here in the US we have legal precedent that the police have no duty to protect you specifically, just that if there is a police department they have to try to do their job in general.
Having worked in criminal defense and planning to be ultimately a criminal defense attorney, it's not like I'm out looking to pop some baddies. It's just reality that we have parts of this country where there are only 1 or 2 police officers at a given time to cover 3300 square miles. A typical response time for a cop who is within a couple of blocks of the incident (very very rare) is about 4 minutes from the time the 911 call is initiated. A fairly well staffed police department will have 1 officer for every 10,000 people or so. Even the absolutely best staffed police departments (which are normally dense metro area) will set 1 officer to 1000 people as a goal (that's 1 officer period, not at a given time, so at a given time there will be quite a bit less than 1 per 1000). Regardless of what the police chiefs say on the news, if you talk to a cop you will find that most of them advocate personal gun ownership because they know just how carppy things are.
I don't understand the second paragraph of yours that I quoted. As far as I can tell that's neither Queen's English nor American English. At any rate, the car suggestion is just a compromise that I think at the very least the school should agree to. In normal non-school life I carry pretty much everywhere I go - there's no need to leave it in the car. In fact, if I weren't a student at the school but just a regular person, I could carry in the school too.
BTW, I have no idea what a Jeyser is and "abduction of a female" is the way that crime is reported...if you want to get technical I guess I should have said 2 abduction of a female incidents, but either way the female would be singular.

If that's the case be a copper not a lawyer. (America really needs another lawyer like King Abdullah needs a can of 3 in 1)..... Ya know, you could do your bit to help improve matters! ........ Then ya can "Rub out" some "Perps" each & every day.

Ah, but I don't want to rub out perps, I want to make sure they get their fair shake in court. And while we don't really need any more lawyers, we sure do need more lawyers who don't screw their clients.
Also, those numbers are not because we can't recruit enough police officers over here. There just isn't enough money to hire more.

Sending a man to the moon (which, btw, would be worth it if we would just go back and mine all the platinum, but nobody listens to me), sodliers to the middle east, and corporate bail outs is all done by the federal government. The rest of this stuff has to be done by the significantly less wealthy local governments.
I said we don't need more lawyers but we do need more lawyers who won't screw their clients. I plan to be a member of the latter group. Also, I don't think it's fair to say we don't need more criminal attorneys. Both the defense and prosecutions are spready pretty thin. What we need to cut down on are these civil liability and corporate lawyers.

It appears you aren't too familiar with the American system. It's asking for trouble for the federal government to start meddling in local government affairs around these parts. (and for good reason if you ask me).
BTW, I don't think we do need any more cops. I think we just need more people to take responsibility for themselves. It wasn't all that long ago that the US didn't have cops but just Sheriff's to serve warrants and the like. It's like doing the dishes - if everybody does their own it's not that much work.

You can't have enough money to run your vital local infrastructure, & to ask for such funding would be asking for trouble..... I am familiar with the American system..... Otherwise known as a carp system...... Go live somewhere sensible. :t

How am I wanting it both ways? All I want is to have my Second Amendment rights honored, and I'm explaining to you why it's important that they are.
I happen to like our system. I could never live under the laws of the Northeastern states or the West Coast states, and I doubt very much the people from those areas would be comfortable with how people around here can be found with a pistol on their hip (open carry without a permit is allowed generally, and in fact in a place that serves alcohol you can only openly carry), can drive loud cars, can register a hot rod to avoid emissions controls by simply paying a fee and not using the car as a daily driver, etc. Our system allowed me to find a place I like and allows them to find a place they like. Everybody can be happy here...just not all together.
Look at the UK - it's not even taboo in London to be bigotted towards Arabs any more, and sane people have to interact with those bigots. Here, the sane people could live one place and the bigots could live in another and not mess with each other's government policies.
