CD-rom 'Disconnect' checked in device mgr?

In my Windows 98, my CD rom has the disconect box checked, but the cd seems to run fine. What, exactly is being disconnected? Is this the default?

Is checking DMA as bad an idea as I think it is? I may have caused myself problems awhile back...

I don't know what that disconnect option is for, but both my CD ROM and CD Writer have that checked.

I checked the DMA a while back and crashed one of my HD's only to be left with a few files on the drive.
