You bought the wrong modem, man.

If you're running win98, I'd try setting everything to automatic. If that doesn't do any good, try setting the MTU to 576 and the RWIN to 4x (MTU -40). Be sure to set TTL to 128 and cache to 16. But I've heard that WinModems just always get a lower connect speed.

The original settings or try the Optimum setting. You'll have to compare results.

I am using a Lucent WinModem and one of the various tweaking programs...so far i have not noticed a difference between settings...I think i am using twekdun and then using DUmeter to check transfer rates. My winmodem has been a very good investment for $29. with a previous ISP i was hitting 7-11 k/sec on downloads regularly.

Applications that change the MTU setting and what not, work best in Windows 95, less in Windows 98, and not too well in Windows 98SE. Win98 includes a built in feature to adjust the MTU size, and depending on how it is set up, you may not see any difference in speed when you use an MTU utility. Still, some of the higher quality utils like Tweakdun offer other tweaks like RWIN and TTL which Win98 doesn't.
