Hello,

It seems that every few days Windows95 crashes and upon running a ScanDisk I find that there are one or more "lost" clusters. I'm running 950A. The drive is a month-old WD Expert 27.3 GB 7200rpm, using ATA/33 (don't have a controller for ATA/66 yet.)

My question is, is this normal? Do you think it's something wrong with the drive, or is Windows95 really that incredibly flakey? What are possible problems here?

Thanks!

Adam

Do you have a utility to check registry errors? Or does it crash when you are doing one thing or another in particular?
When the system crashes, which Windoze does quite often, there are usually lost clusters. Could be the hard drive but I would check to see if there are any other conflicts. The lost fragments are normal when the system crashes though. They are remnants of what the system was doing at the time of crash. Norton Util has a good registry fixer and so does Mijenix in Fix it 99. Good luck-
Dave

just to make sure it is not your hard drive
go to western digital here http://www.westerndigital.com/service/ftp/drives.html#dlgtools
and download the Data Lifegaurd tools
and let that program run a check on your hard drive
if it says every thing is fine then you will know it's not the drive and can start looking at other things like your cable's or operating system http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Thanks for the suggestions. I've got the Lifeguard Tools and have run the check a few times, no errors found. I've got some extra IDE cables so I'll play with that, otherwise I'll consider the upgrade.
