I am having trouble accessing secured sites: E*Trade, Hotmail.com, Live Charts etc...
I am using Win98 SE, I can surf every where except for the above mentioned sites. Is there a setting that might have been changed. I let my nephew play a few games on windows. I hope to heck he didn't mess with my registry. Has any one ever heard of this happening. I contacted E*Trade he said I would have to reinstall IE 5.0. I think he was giving me a quick fix. (to benefit himself) Well I tried to un and reinstall IE 5.0, it is still blocking me out! Any tips or fixes would be appreciated. Thanx ahead of time for you posts.

Hi Recordlord

Have you checked in Tools/Internet Options/Security/Custom Level to see if such as cookies, Java/JavaScript, ActiveX, and other settings have been disabled and/or changed?

Perhaps nephew was playing in there also...

Did you ever obtain an ID certificate on-line? Sometimes, if your certificate date expires, sites which look for certificates won't let you in again until you renew the ID certificate.

Also, this probably isn't it, but are you trying to access these sites on a company computer through a firewall or proxy server? - They may have those sites blocked specifically in the firewall to dis-allow access from company computers ( reference to nephew asside )

Another thing you might try is replacing your IE5 install with IE 4.01SP2 from this area's download tab www.microsoft.com/ie (http://www.microsoft.com/ie)

I've had "issues" with IE5 myself, but never with IE4SP2

RL, what level of encryption are you using? Could it be that those sites require 128-bit and you only have 40 or 56-bit? Click Help > About Internet Explorer to check.

You can download the 128-bit encryption update directly from MS free of charge, as long as you swear on the Bible that you live in the US or Canada and will not export the technology http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
