Java Application Creation

Having problems figuring out how plugins are implemented.

I basically just want to write my own little study program.

I have taken class upon class of programming, and have no real life experience.
Trying to get into actually writing real code that does favorable things for me.

-_- as of right now its driving me insane.

A ground-up Tutorial would be great.
Actual coding isn't a problem, i just need to be shown how to get started with using plugin's and libraries and figuring out what i need.

I am using java, Eclipse. SDK 5.

:P any help or questions would be great.

Java 6 is not a bad book either if you wish to go that route.
And the local library was able to come up with 3 relatively new books also.
