Hi all - my other half's 500gb Maxtor External HDD is shafted, I think.

We've only had it a week and "backed up" some stuff onto it. Now when I turn it on, the green power light comes on, and it makes a sort of a beeping noise every 1 second. Not a beep as in you'd hear from a speaker, but like a mechanical sound that comes across as a beep. Not a click though.

It's also not being recognised by any of our machines.

I fear I know what your response will be, in which case I'll be glad I kept the receipt, but I'm concerned to send it back because it's got our stuff on it. No, not kiddy pics or warez, but mainly work stuff. The cost of data recovery is obscene if done by a third party so I'm trying to work out my other options. I presume there are none if it is a mechanical failure.

Would a maxtor recovery tool thingy work, if there's one you can run from command line or something?

Cheers,
Matt.

if you only had one copy of your data, that is NOT a backup.

you can try opening up the enclosure, but that will probably void the warranty. That's why I always build my own instead of buying prebuilt drives.

if you do decide to extract the drive, you can connect it directly to the motherboard and see if you can get the data.
