I have win98se on one machine (IBM w/recovery disk)...I know..I know http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif and when I want to install something from...start/settings/control panel/add&remove/windows setup...I select what I want and click Have Disk and it does it without having to put in the disk.
I also have win95b on another machine and I would like to be able to do the same thing. The win95b disk is getting pretty scratched up from using it for quite awhile.
What I would really like to do is put everything in a seperate folder, so if I ever lose the disk, I will have everything on the HD. I just don't know what all I should copie in that folder.
Any help would be appreciated...Thank you

If I am understanding your question just copy all the .cab files off your disk(s) into a folder on your HD.The reason your 98b isn't asking for the cd is because it was installed from the cab files on the actual HD.
Good Luck

Would I do a find for *.cab and then put ALL these in that folder and then I would never need to use the disk again?
Thanks

Hey R[][]FER
just browse your win95 cd to the folder called Win95 and drag it to your hd..it will create a new folder on the hd with all the necessary cab files..then when you need the cd direct the install file to your win95 folder..there is a program out there that will make it automatic for you..if you want it I will track it down for you

Copy the directory win98 to a derectory on your hard drive not just the cab. files.
Then when it ask for the files you wi;ll have to tell it where to find them.

If you are familiar with regedit you can change the path that windows looks for the cabs. its at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> Software -> Microsoft -> Windows -> Current Version -> Setup. the string is called SourcePath. Just change the value of SourcePath to be the path to the folder that holds the .cab files.

golfcart...
Haven't dabbled in there yet, too much.
I found what you said on this machine....would I then highlight source path, click on edit, then Modify and then type in the right path?
Just for curiosity sake.
Thanks for the info.

Um, maybe I misread. If you have a restore disk, then the cabs should be on the hard drive already. Look under C:\windows\options\cabs, if you point it to this location, it should work without copying more of the cd onto the hard drive

As an option to be able to keep the scratched CD, there is a product out that repairs the scratches on CDs {I can't remember the name offhand, just check in an office or computer supply next to the disk cleaning stuff} Since the information is below the surface of the CD, and most scratches, this stuff is like a car wax, if you will, and it covers the scratches...it worked on a couple of my kids game cds...altho it took more than one application to completely get rid of the skipping...

FYI. You do not need the entire 95 directory from the CD. All you need are the cabinet files (*.cab) If you want a copy of scandisk, and other superfluous **** then it wont hurt you to copy the whole directory, but it is wasted space IMO.
