IE 5.5

I'm back again. but, this time I wasen't gone because I got a underground site virus agian. it was from the ie 5.5 upgrade. I first went to 5.01 with no problems. and than after I went to 5.5 it ran ok. until I touned the system off/on. and than it wouldn't go online. it wouldn't do anything. I couldn't find a add/remove for it, it wouldn't repair. it wouldn't let me put 5.0 or 5.02 back on the drive. I deleted it, removed the dir. ect and than took out what I could in the registry. I deleted everything I could in the ie part of the registry. and than installed ie 5.0 from cd and everytime I went on-line I got a fatel errow or ileagle oper. about every 2 seconds while on-line. I had to keep hit the ok on the errows messages. and than I deltree the windows dir. from dos and reloaded oem full ver. 98 and still got the same thing. I installed windows from inside itself with no luck. and so I had to format the drive. and so I tried the 5.5 again. and the same thing happened. has anyone else had this problem with the 5.5 version? it ran fine while it was running. just, screwed up after a restart. also, I'm not back to running dual boot 98/ntws with not problems. so shoot me some info on this. let me know what you think about it. and gald to be back again.

Oh yes! I had that nightmare a while back. I used 98lite to remove it.
Ie 5.5 seems much better on Millennium. It is still a bit bugy. I think it was made with Millennium in mind and not win98/95.

I like that, no the second time. I wrote everything down that I did. and was hopeing to find the problem. that way. if it happened to myself or someone else I would have the cure. I'm going to try it on ntws next. and if it misses up my ntws. I might consider it.LOL

Wish I could help you out, but I'm still happily using IE 4.01SP2 - I still consider all IE 5.x to be beta software and won't allow it on my systems.

I know - IE 5.02 is in general release..... - that means 6 million customers are now helping MS write service packs for it - which means to me it's still in Beta.

For the longest time, MS NT support was asking if users had IE 5 loaded on their systems - if they did, most of the time they would start the support call by uninstalling it and loading IE4.X "as a matter of procedure" -

does that tell you enough about IE5 and microsoft newly released software?

If you're going to tinker - you found the right board - welcome - and have more than one system.....

So - wish you luck - you may have damaged the registry with that many core software changes on the system - you'll probably need to reinstall after a good fdisk and a format.

Then go to the IE home page download area and get a copy of ie4.01SP2 -

actually i just downloaded and installed 5.5 on a laptop of mine that i use for crash tests .... i still have WIN95a on it. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif when the download was complete and i was doing the install i kept waiting to see smoke billowing up from my trusty notebook but, go figure, it went through with no problems. I've been using it since then and am still in the process of testing for holes, etc. but so far so good. i'm a definite netscape fan though and am VERY anxious to see the new browser when it comes up! WooOoOOooHOOoOOoOo!

Alex, thanks for the welcome.LOL, I have been around a while.just been busy with the xmas systems and the taxes. and yes, I do have mulit systems, about 21 of them. I have had my own shop since 1/9/89. that is the reason. I don't sell anything on the board. I only buy. the rules say no dealers. and I'm a by the book man. and as far as the ie 5.0 on nt. I have been running the 5.0 on ntws since it came out. with no problems, at all. and the same with oem 98 full ver. I just can't get it"98" to accept 5.5., so I'll just stick with 5.0 or the 5.1, and the registry should have been ok. it was set up with new install of oem 98 full with the ie that came on the cd and than upgraded to 5.0 than 5.1 and all was fine. and than 5.5 and that was the end of it. and as far as the fdisk/format goes. I use partition magic ver 5.0 full, and I do a complete install atleast 3/5 times a week. I spend alot of time outside the u.s. looking for info. at underround sites. and I'm the virus getter "KING". just can't figure out the 5.5 even with a complete new fresh start. hope this answers your reply. I would like to try 5.5, it runs fine after the fresh install. as long as I don't do a cold boot. off/on than it hangs with the errows and the ilegal app. errows. all info. needed on this will be applyed to the problem.
