I just purchased a Dell T5400 workstation for home use. It has a crappy Nvidia Quadro NVS 290 64 bit/6.4 GB/Sec graphics card. I am thinking about installing a gaming card in order to breath a little life into the system and to improve graphics. The card I am thinking about using is XFX PVT84JYAJG GeForce 8600 GT 512MB 128-bit GDDR2.

Is this unheard of? Installing a gaming card in a workstation? Would it work?

Obviously it all depends upon the motherboard, don't ya think? Look up its specs and go from there before deciding upon that solution. Also, how old is that workstation? Things have changed alot over the past two years. lol

How old is the workstation? It was built three days ago and is on it's way to me now.

Why did you get a workstation if you wanted a gamer? The 8600GT is low-medium level.

I am not trying to turn a workstation into a "gamer". I just thought a gaming graphics card might speed up graphics a bit and improve resolution over what's in it now.

Quadro is built for workstation market, so it's not meant to run games in the first place. If you're not using the system for CAD or other graphics applications, you could install a gaming card. Make sure you have the proper PCIe power connections on the power supply.
