when searching for my actual threads i can see only very old threads.
is this common?

Depends on how you did your search:)

Easiest thing to do is click on your user name->Find ALL Posts

but but but that only brings up 500 results!

Yep...Looks like 500 is the magic number..

Maximum Search Results to Return
Any search results over this number will be discarded->500

But, you can still search for specific things that you posted years ago if needed.

Use advanced search, filter by date.
