I have a wired network in my office with two computers, a router (Linksys Wireless G), cable modem. The wired network works flawlessly.

I have installed a Linksys Wireless-G PCI Adapter in my daughter's computer, in the garage apartment, so that she can have internet access.

I use Network Magic to manage my networks.

She had no problem connecting to the internet until last week when we had a severe storm. It was so bad that I shut everything down in the office, even going so far as to unplug the phone line from the fax machine. I went upstairs and turned her computer off to protect it.

Ever since that time, she has been unable to connect to the network.

I purchased a Linksys Wireless-G Range Expander without any luck reconnecting her to the network. The range expander is linked to the router without any problems.

I know her adapter works because I can connect her to the neighbor's network without any problems, but I find that option extremely distasteful and consider it dishonest.

Her computer specs:

Compaq Presario SR1800NX
346 Intel Celeron D
512 MB RAM
100 GB HD
Windows XP Home SP2
Linksys Wireless-G PCI Adapter

I've tried resetting the router and the modem to no avail.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

what channel is your neighbor using? make sure your network is using a different channel. linksys defaults to 6, so try 1 or 11.

When you say you reset the router, do you mean back to factory settings or just cycling the power?

do you have any router security set? disable wep/wpa security and mac filtering. enable SSID broadcast. that gives your compaq the best chance of seeing the network. once you have the connection established, you can set up your security again.

Thank you for your response.

I tried changing the channel to 11 with no luck.

By resetting the router, I meant power cycling it. I have restored it to factory defaults and will let you know if that worked after I have a chance to check it, which will be tomorrow evening.

Thanks again.

Can you see your daughter's computer info (IP address, etc.) when you open the network map in Network Magic?

What sort of errors do you receive when you try and connect your daughter's computer to the internet on your home network?

It's possible shutting everything down during the storm may have reset a firewall setting or some other setting. With more info I should be able to help you fix this.

First, check that your Router is Broadcasting its SSID or wireless network NAME
Next be sure you know what wireless security password you set on the Router
Your computer's wireless settings must match the Password and the SSID should
be in the Workgroup field

Those are ways to help secure you home network, but I think the problem is the inability to get one computer back onto their home network. Because they are using Network Magic it can be assumed these options are easily changed from any computer located on the network.

The reason I brought up firewall being a possible issue can be explained as such:

The best way to know whether the Platform is able to communicate with your other machines running the Platform on your network is to look at the Network Map in Network Magic. Those computers that are in communication with each other will have a green house on the icon for them -- your local computer should always have one.

By far, the most common reason that the Platform is not able to communicate with your other computers is that a firewall is blocking that communication. The Platform uses port 1196 for this communication, but different firewall applications represent firewall configuration differently - another common representation is whether you "trust" the Pure Networks Platform.

Here is a FAQ which describes how to configure some of the most common firewalls: http://support.networkmagic.com/cgi-bin/pure.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=4

Some firewalls will trust the Platform automatically, and some won't.

One thing that can happen with Platform upgrades is that some versions may look to a firewall like the Platform is a new application, so rules you have already created no longer apply. Going back and reconfiguring the firewall again should fix that problem.

If not, I'll just keep asking questions until we figure this out. I'm here to help. ;)
