I'm helping my brother upgrade his HP 754n Desktop. He wants a 19" LCD which is no problem, but he has to get a new AGP 4/8x vid card. His onboard "Intel Extreme Graphics" chip won't get it. I can get him a EVGA FX5500 128mb card for $27 shipped. Would the 256mb version be a big improvement or overkill. Or, would anyone recommend another card?

What is your price range? $27 is really cheap. I wasn't a fan of the nvidia 5x00 cards. ATI was ahead until nvidia came out with the 6x00 cards.
What other cards are you considering? It's hard to recommend cards, since many of the oldies are off the market already.

If he's not going to be gaming, the FX5500 (either the 128 or 256MB) will be fine.

Thanks for your quick replies. I did a short research of vid cards and the FX5500 seemed to be a good match. The Radeon versions sometimes had a problem w/ his Mobo. He plays older games (1999- 2001 types). But, I'm sure he would be interested in some newer games. Not the latest, but 2002-2004 games.

Up to you. The HP PSUs aren't the beefiest, so your Radeon problems could have been related to that. The FX5500 is basically a slightly higher clocked 5200. You might be able to go with a 9250 or 9550, but i'm not sure what the prices are.
In any case, make sure to get a card with a DVI port for the new LCD. I've seen a couple with dual VGAs.
