I've just purchased ten used WDD800BB hard drives for resale and personal use and wish to test them quickly after they are delivered to know the health and welfare of each one. What are some of the better (and hopefully free) utilities that are most commonly used. I have Westeren Digital's already but wanted some opinions. I don't want to test some of these drives and have some buyers holler back at me in a week and complain of a bad drive.

It's best to use the manufacturer's diags. You would need their error code for warranty claims anyway.
If you're still not sure, download UBCD from the Tech Tools link and another one of the diags. seatools works on most drives, just disregard the temp reading for nonseagate/maxtor drive.

Sorry, but I don't do PMs. I feel that it's contradictory to the nature of a forum. If you have a question, there is probably someone out there with the same question. Kill 2 birds with one stone, as they say.

I understand what you mean by defeating the purpose of an open forum….so here I go to try to explain….I followed your advice on those ten hard drives by using Western Digital’s utilities…
I’ll ask you dummy questions about the two different utilities later…but I used the test program to check the drives…
They were all good except for one that continuously double clicked physically as a bad drive…
Western Digital not only checked SMART but also as I did the extended test, gave me the model number, serial number and other pertinent info as you said might be valuable. Thanks for the good advice and tips.
The reason I asked for a PM is merely (but I agree with you) that I wished to ask you if you had heard of or had any past reference dealings with…
Pacific Internet Exchange, LLC (PIE) out in San Francisco? They service major accounts out there and get their stock from Polywell Systems.
They’ve done me right so far although there is a definite lack of communications between sales, handling and the actual shipping department. Other than that, I have little complaints…just wanted to know if you knew of the company or had heard of them?
Didn’t necessarily wish to spread any bad rumors about them if there were negatives was all.
Still appreciate all the help, the learning and I do understand now as far as the tutoring goes concerning forums (smiling)

Since PIE is an LLC, they are an obvious small company and the chance that any of us have dealt with them before is slim at best.

Never heard of that company. sorry
You can also run seatools on non-seagate/maxtor drives. just ignore the temp reading

Gonna give you a heads-up right now...WD 80GB hard drives saw a lot of failures, percentage-wise, than larger and smaller drives a few years back. No idea why, but another forum I'm in seemed to have one or two threads weekly for months about 80GB drives dying early deaths. If you've bought a quantity of them, be prepared for a few.

They were assembled in Mexico Lgbpop.
I had two of those critters.
A Seagate Zero write, Fukk run twice saved the second one for and some others. Really trust, not lately.
