Hi there, I'm looking for some advice here, I have ADSL and am using a wireless modem. My plan speed is 1500/256.

In the mornings I have what I consider a normal speed broadband (for my 1.5 connection) but as the day progresses it becomes slower and slower until by evening it's so slow you just give up and switch off. It's only been happening for the past 3 weeks.

I spent 2.5 hrs on the phone with my ISP on Saturday and the tech support guy feels the fault isn't with the modem or computer, and I tend to agree with him. We've checked to make sure no-one else is using the connection (password protected and only my computer showing as online and my volume usage is actually a lot less than usual - probably due to the fact we just give up more often than not and switch off the puter).

They have a test file you can download, an example of my speeds for downloading in the morning is 1 min 28 secs to download a 13mb file, 2hrs later it takes 2 mins 15 secs for the same file, and 2 hrs after that, 7 mins 32 secs for the same file, by evening it was 11 mins and still going and I had lost the will to live by then and gave up.

Next morning, back to 1 min 28 again.

Any suggestions? A workmate suggested network congestion but the ISP denies this is possible? My previous ISP provided consistently good speeds, and for the first few months with this ISP all was fine, it has just recently all gone to ****!

I just don't believe it's an issue with my modem when it works perfectly in the mornings and only goes slower as the day progresses.

Any help or suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.

For grins - in the afternoon click on Start->Run and type: ipconfig /flushDNS

Try for a day a wired connection.

It could be that in the evening more people in your neighborhood using their Wireless, and the interferences reduces your wireless bandwidth.

You mentioned how your ISP provider (at least, in your case, the tech support guy feels this way) said the fault isn't with the modem or computer -- he may be correct.

However, I'm suspect of ruling out a possible intruder. You did say that you checked to make sure no-one else is using the connection, but unless you're constantly checking, there is no way to tell. Especially if on most occasions you simply turn off your router and give up.

The next time your internet connection is lagged or increasingly slow, I'd like to suggest you try a free wireless security scan download from Pure Networks. You can find it here: http://www.purenetworks.com/securityscan/

The Intruder Detection automatically identifies intruders and alerts you. And it only takes about two seconds using network lock to kick any intruders off your wireless network, permanently.

For full disclosure -- I do work for Pure Networks, so if you have any further questions please do not hesitate to ask! I'll be more than happy to assist you.

It's never fun dealing with home wireless network issues, so hopefully this helps!
