HP 6350 amd333, 160RAM, 8.0QuantumHD, this corporate machine is a real turd.. Now it is frozen on Win98 start screen. I had sound problems and upon removing the audio codecs(per MS)it is all stopped up.. Went to HP's site,, ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.. well, you know!! I have the boot disc and the HP recovery discs, which will not run, at all. I've reformatted this junk about sixteen times in 20 months.. I've never been so disappointed about any other computer,, this thing is slow and problematic.. thanks for any help, I know how to format and start over, I'd like to just wave the majic mouse over it and it work again,, DrVette

I hate to be the barer of bad news, but it doesn't sound good seeing as you have done the reformats without any improvement.

Splash screen lock ups make me think of video drivers, but that may not be the whole of it since you had improvements with the deletion of sound.

MB comes to mind - maybe a BIOS update available? If not, look for any additional updated MB drivers.

Does it hang up in safe mode?

Have you tried turning off the external cache to see if that helps?

Have you tried removing all the cards, except the video card, unless it's onboard?

try hitting esc to get rid of spl;ash screen,
you might see an error message. If not you can boot from floppy and read the bootlog.txt
file. If you can boot in safemode go to systeminformation/tools/systemconfiguration,
select diagnostic startup.
Also check device manager in safe mode and
delete multiple listings if found.
I hope this helps.

The previous formats were sucessfull, the removal of the sound codecs started this problem. HP is notorious for having poor bios updates. Can't get to safe mode at all, thanks Nathan the cache is something I didn't know might help, the i/o cards were the next thing to try.. HP's solutions were rather thin and so far of no assistance.. will try the suggestions.. DrVette
