If her computer is not part of a network, and is on Win95/98 go into control panel, then networks. Then you can remove the NetBios protocol, reboot, and hopefully she will be safe again!
Then go to this site and check it has worked ok http://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

Or she can go into c:\windows\system and rename
vbnt.386 to vbnt.closed
either way..it's done

richamies...
Does your computer also have to be set to desktop computer in file system properties, instead of network server also?
I deleated the NetBios protocol but my 139 port is still open...so grc.com says.
Thanks

I have the same problem but it's on W2k......
Try disabling file/print sharing, the little checkbox under the file and print sharing button in networks, again on control panel.
Other than that I'm of little use http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif
BTW it'll be fine set as a server, that is just the buffer and cache settings for files.

richamies...
It said at grc.com that there is little chance of anything being exposed to another computer.
It just lists the machine name, workgroup and user name.
I'm not networked...just a stand-alone.
Thanks

http://grc.com/su-rebinding9x.htm
gives good, easy instruction on setting your bindings, whether dial-up, cable/dsl or lan.
Actually, all of Steve Gibson's site is good reading.
