What you're doing should work.

From windoze help:
"To modify a file type -
In My Computer or Windows Explorer, on the View menu, click Folder Options.
Click the File Types tab.
Click the file type you want to modify, and then click Edit.
If necessary, in Description of type, type the appropriate information for the new file type.
If necessary, in Associated extension, type the extension you want for the new file type.
Click New.
In Action, enter the action that you want to define (such as Open or Print).
In Application used to perform action, enter the command that you want to complete this action, and then click OK.
Note - You can also modify a command. In Actions, click the command you want to modify, and then click Edit.

Also in Adobe Acrobat general prefs. click "web browser intergration"

This capability was working a few weeks ago. Now when I try to read a pdf file I must first open Adobe Acrobat reader and use the File/Open command.

Otherwise when I try to launch one from the web or from Windows Explorer I get the message .../../file.pdf not a recognized WindowsNT file type.

I tried adding the extension through My Computer View/Options File Types but when I entered pdf as applicatoin extension got the message "file type in use by pdf_auto_file"

I'm trying to resolve this without calling the help desk here. Any help appreciated.
