I have a user who has powerpoint 2000 installed on his pc, he is trying to open a powerpoint file that was created in powerpoint 2003 and secured he gets this message.

"Powerpoint can't open the type of file"

I think the problem is that he is using powerpoint 2000 can someone confirm this for me.

Needs to get the updates.
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/downloads/default.aspx
That should take care of part of the problem.

Or get the original owner of the Powerpoint file to save it as the older Powerpoint 2000 file format.

MS has hotfixes for all their Office apps (including the compatibility pak for 2007 versions) but sometimes there are issues with a "prepackaged" powerpoint(extension .pps) regardless.

Make sure the Office 2000 user uses Microsoft update to get all his/her XP and any MS Office app updates - I believe there are SP2 and now SP3 available for Office 2000. And also look into the "optional" updates when you're there.

Just be careful not to mess with any "updated" hardware or device drivers listed there - if it ain't broke don't fix it, and I've made the mistake of using an MS driver that disabled a sound card and in another case a network card.

I spent most of yesterday downloading the service packs and updates for office 2000 and still had the problem. when I open the file in powerpoint 2003 and remove the password the user was able to open the document with no problems.
