When I first bought and installed my Sound Blaster Live! a while back, I didn't have problems playing CDs on my generic 8x cd-rom.
No problems = playback in all 4 speakers
Now, just the other day, I would stick a CD in to listen to, and the playback would only come out of the FRONT LEFT and REAR LEFT speakers. I've tried everything.
1) checked the connections to the subwoofer/soudncard
2) checked speaker selection (4 speak, 2 speak, headphone, etc)
3) went to soundblaster website, downloaded newest drivers and Live! Ware 3.0
4) tried switching cd audio cable to other cd rom drive

Nothing helps. It's kind of annoying, has anyone had this problem?

System Setup:
Celeron 366@550 on Abit BM6
128MB PC100 RAM
Maxtor 13.6GB UDMA66 drive
HP 7200i CD-W drive
8x Cd-rom
Sound Blaster Live! Value w/Live! Ware 3.0
Cambridge SoundWorks FPS1000

Try going to your Surround Mixer program and see if anything has changed there...I had your problem once or twice..then made presets
while in there..hope it works out for you.

I'm looking through my mixer right now. Whenever I turn the balance slider to the right speakers, the sound goes dead. In the middle or to the left, it comes out the left front/rear speaker only.

With all you've checked about all that's left is the wiring itself or the amp. Just to be certain, try a pair of headphones on the sblive output jack.
You will likely need a meter to check the wiring if you have both channels there.

I also forgot to mention that the problem I've having with the CD audio, ONLY occurs when playing CDs. I can play Quake3, listen to MP3, wav, MIDI, anything in 4 speaker mode. It's just playing Cds that are giving me the problem.

I reinstalled a fresh copy of Live! Ware 3.0 with LAVA and Playcenter. It didn't help, same problem.

Can you try the CD-Drive with another sound card? Maybe the port on the cars may have gone bad.

I once had a similar problem when I installed a DVD drive along with my normal CDROM.

Check the mixer and make sure all of the tabs are un-muted. I had a problem enabling both CD Audio and CD Digital but after much stuffing around it seemed to work.....I don't have an explanation how or a method to fix it if it stuffs up again.

Also check to see if all the tabs are un-muted in Play control (the little speaker in the taskbar)......it should be the same as mixer but check.

Also check to audio cable. I had a problem with two cables looking the same but on closer inspection they were wired differently at the connection.

I have seen this problem mentioned on some newsgroups with no clear explanation as to why or how to fix it.

check the audio wire connected from your cd-rom to your sound blaster live.
