I just had cable modem installed and want to be able to easily enable and disable the ethernet card. This can be done by going to MyComputer/Properties/DeviceManager/Ethernetcard/Disable.
There has to be a way I can make a shortcut to put on my desktop or in the tray to enable and disable the card to close the connection.

are you on a limited time per month internet account with your isp? otherwise, it does not matter unless you are using the card for some other reason....just curious to why you need to do it...

Let me know when you find out. I have never tried to figure out how to do it.The easiest way is to unplug the modem at bootup. If you are woried about security get BlackICe Defender or @guard. Both are fire walls.

It is a security issue. I dont know if I want to put the money down for a firewall yet (at least not until I decide to keep my cable modem). Besides, there is no reason to leave it connected when not in use.

Before I got Black-Ice, I was looking for some kind of switch to put on the co-axle cable to disconnect it. (anyone old enough to remember the switch on a commodore 64?)LOL

Anyway, someone told me later that I could have gotten a switch for the other cable, the network cable with the RJ-45 plug. It would have had to have been a 3-way switch, because I don't think they make an on-off switch. Take the cable coming out of the box into the "common" plug on the switch, connect one side to the lan card and leave the 3'rd plug empty.
