Winxp SP2 firewall

forced into SP2 for VPN upgrade which was working. VNC4 & Remote Desktop worked with my office machine.

after SP2 VPN connects but VNC4 and Remote Desktop connection times out.
Tracert of office machine name while using VPN resolves IP but only hops to VPN Server then fails.

Think issue is Windows Firewall which is behaving strangely. Windows Security Center reports Windows Firewall is Active. Trying to display Firewall config fails
"due to unidentified problem. Windows cannot display Windows Firewall settings".

Services:
RPC call : started
Security Center: started
Windows MGT Ins: started
Event log: started
RPC Call: started

Nothing unusual in any Event Viewer log (system, security, etc).

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Sounds like a virus or spyware issue.

could you access the firewall settings right after the upgrade? if you never got into the security settings to begin with, then SP2 might not have installed properly.

were you running any other firewall? most third party FWs will disable windows FW.
