I have this 400CDT laptop I am told has no hard drive or battery. Does the HD drop in the big bay in bottom front and the battery installs on top of it, or must I unscrew case to put the HD in? At present when turned on the bottom fourth of screen is white. Is that fatal, or simply there because there's no HD, etc.?

This is real borderline for me. I've only worked on a 150cdt or something like that and a Libretto. Anyway, the battery SHOULD be fairly long and it SHOULD be easy to tell which bay it sits in as there should be battery like contacts. I believe the harddrive was also under the laptop and was a good deal smaller than the battery/battery compartment. This may be of little help, but I would almost guarantee that the battery is going to be the larger of the 2 compartments. As for he half white screen... No idea. I've never turned one on without everything plugged in. If your model is similar, pop the keyboard up and see if there is a memory module installed under it. Maybe under a flexible plastic shield. If so, make sure that sits right in the slot. Those connectors are tiny and can make a bad contact sometimes. If there is none, it's a good option for an upgrade later on.

Thanks for the input. I wasn't sure what that compartment was for, besides being obviously for a battery. I'll go after a HD on ebay with more confidence now. Was looking to avoid disassembling the case, since I'm new at this but now will also try figuring out how to pop up the keyboard ....sounds simple.
