I had NT4.0 dual-booted w/Win95 for some time, but finally removed it. Aol won't work with NT so I did everything on W95. I found NT to be very fast, but much fussier about adding new software or hardware. Errors would not just lock it up, but occasionally even prevent a restart! However, it's worth it just for the educational value, as it only took another 100 megs or so to install it.

I am running windows 98, and I DO NOT LIKE IT. Those who network home computers seem to like it though; if you have the computers, go for 98. I personally would like to use NT or linux as they are more stable than 98. If you use a lot of USB, you'll need to stick with 98. Hey- let us know what you pick.

Hi

I have both OS on my PC at home. I have to say that I LOVE NT ! much more stable, much faster.
They are some drawbacks: no USB support, forget about playing games, ... That's the reason why I still use Win98: only for games !!!
If, like me, you have a small network at home, go for NT !

Let us know what's your choice !

This may surprise some of you, but I usually suggest to people to stick with one or the other. However, if you need to learn it for a job, career change, or just plain want to learn, that's one thing. Learning windows is pretty difficult in itself.

As to which is better, well that all depends. What are you going to do with the computer? Business or for home use, meaning games? NT is for pure business use. Many companies would like to switch to NT, but can't because of the limitions of the operating system and the software that's written for it. Whenever you want to pick an operating system, the first thought is what do I want to do with it and does the software run in it?

I could write more paragraphs, but I think you get the idea.

NT 4 can't see fat 32 partitions. You will definitely need fat16 or ntfs partions for nt, ntfs is better, but win98 can't see ntfs, so if you want dual boot you will need fat16

Uhmm, my friend uses NT and Win98 and he uses FAT32 last time I checked. The only thing that Win98 cant read is NTFS. NT can read fat16/32/and NTFS. You can also convert fat32/16 to ntfs, but you cannot convert ntfs to fat16/32. btw NT is way better for servers not Win9x.

NT4 pros : way more stable/way faster/higher security
NT4 cons : harder to fix/setup/not compatible with many things you can run on Win9x

NT was designed more for companies than home users. They didnt plan on them playing many games |) well maybe not LOL
Remember there are to types of NT. I would reccommend NT4 Server

When you install NT it should install a dual-boot utility for you. I beleive, havent installed it in a long time you should wait for someone to confirm this first.

Well, actually, NT4 can't natively support FAT32, nor can Win98 natively support NTFS. However, with a little help and a little money, you can get either one to do both.

Check this out for Win98 using NTFS:
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntfs98.htm

and for NT4 using FAT32:
http://www.sysinternals.com/fat32.htm

Both of these can do read/write in their full (pay) versions, but they are both readonly in the free versions.

Now to save up more pennies... I'm at about $3 in pennies so far. /forum/smile.gif

I agree with Nathan....
If I wanted to I could run both OS, but I have no need to. win98 fine for me. nt strikes me a being a norton utilities kinda thing....very powerful, but you don't use most of it. If you are running a network, definitely go for nt(although I would advise a more current service pack..i believe it is up to sp5 now), but if you are not going to utilize the network capabilities of nt, then i would consider it more hassle than it is worth. but good luck though with whatever you do!!! =-)

True but its good just to know how to use it.

Well let's throw something into the heap here to get some peoples attention. A few computer consultant I work with says he spent about 80 hours converting computers to fat32 and installing NT 4 on them before he came to this job I'm on. I know...I know. If I can talk him into posting tomorrow, I'll let him explain it.

I dual boot NT4 and Win98 at home.

I have a FAT16 boot partition, a NTFS partition for NT, and my Win98 partition is still FAT16 so that NT can read it. I only use 98 for games that don't work on NT. I use NT for everything else.

I use NT because of its stability. I've rarely had NT crash. 98 is more stable than 95, but I've had my share of problems with it too.

98 is more readily compatible with more sw & hw than NT, but I've never had any problems finding a way to make something work under NT. If you plan on using USB on NT, don't, I've yet to find anything that will make USB work on NT.

About security....
Win9x, security is a joke!
WinNT, very secure.

BTW, I had installed my NT before I got 98, so dual booting for me was a little bit easier to do. I've never tried installing NT after 98 on FAT32.

Good Luck!
