Ok, so I finally put together my new system (well, at least I am on the way). I got throught the initial bootup ect just fine. I installed my DVD drivers and rebooted. But the computer doesnt see the DVD drive so I cant install windows http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

More details:
Tyan Trinity 400 MB
500MHZ Celeron
128MB SDRAM PC133
Voodoo3 2000
Maxtor 20GB 7200RPM ATA66

I/O Magic MagicDVD 8x

During the initial bootup the computer shows that DVD8x is connected to the secondary IDE channel
The Windows98 startup screen comes on
Then I get the following msg:

CD-Rom Device Driver for IDE (Four Channels)
Driver Version :1.0
Device Name :IDECD000
Drive 0: Port=170 (Secondary Channel), Maxtor IRQ=15
Firmware Version :12
Transfer Mode :PCI Bus Master Ultra DMA mode2

C:\>
C:\>MSCDEX /D:IDECD000
Bad command or file name

C:\>MSCDEX /D:IDECD000
Bad command or file name

C:\>

That is the msg as it appears. Any ideas as to what the problem may be and more importantly how to fix it?

You need a copy of MSCDEX.EXE either on your hard drive or on your boot up disk. If you don't have a copy I'll dig one out for you.

What does MSCDEX.EXE do and how do I use it?
Also, how do I copy it from a floppy to the hd in Dos mode?

MSCDEX.EXE is the file that lets ms-dos talk to the cd-rom driver. If you have it on a floppy, insert the floppy disk, and type the following

A:
copy mscdex.exe C:\

and then remove the floppy disk, reboot and hopefully it will all work fine http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

You can try finding a win98 startup disk. It should have generic drivers for cdroms. Boot off that and run install off the cd.

It is working fine now. Thanks richamies, it did the trick. For some reason this file was not on the startup disk windows made.
