I have this 80 gig drive that says it is only 54 gigs !!! where did the rest of the drive go and can I or how do I get it back???

give some specs first. OS? file system? when did you notice the problem? did you install or change anything recently?

The extra space could be assigned to the swap file, the temporary internet file storage, the system restore storage, temporary file storage for Windows applications, or any number of other incorrect settings.

What does it look like in Disk Management? (Right-click on My Computer and choose Manage.)

80GB drives are reported by Windows as having only 74 or so GB. If the drive has a hidden restore partition, that would account for the other 20GB.

I agree that Disk Management would show what's up.

You'd probably know this already if you were dual-booting Linux, but I'll say it anyhow: Linux partitions aren't natively seen by Windows, so if you do have a Linux distro on that HDD that could also account for the missing space.
