Have a Pentium II / ATX case....
it quick shutting down on it's own. With the ATX MB's and cases I was under the impression that they all shut themself's off.
This one you have to shut of manually..
It just recently started this ?????
Am I missing something?
Thanks

Check in the BIOS. There should be a setting for powering off. I'm not exactly sure how it's worded. And I'm even more confused on how it would have been changed on it's own.
Does the system actually get to the '..you can turn off your computer' screen? Or does it stay at 'Windows is Shutting Down' screen?

Have you changed any hardware or changed any settings in your BIOS prior to this happening?
Have u visited the microsoft update site? I did'nt have any problems until I downloaded the fix when some systems would'nt shut down properly with win98se. (I thought I would just check it out even though it said it was just for prob systems) From then on my system rebooted everytime I selected shutdown.
I had a spare drive at the time so I just formatted c: and started over - lesson learnt until next time I need a reformat.

Did a bios flash. But went back into the bios and redid everything. Set up the Power managment etc. All it does is it goes to the Shut down screen like an AT board does and you have to manually turn it off....????

You might want to open the case and double check the connectors that come from the front of the case (HD LED, Reset, Reset SW etc) and into the board.

hold the power button for 5 seconds, that should power down the pc. Next try re installing windows if still no good try a new power supply(borrow rather than buy one)if still the same looks like a new motherboard needed

Which OS are you using?
I remember that Win98 had some trouble shutting down entirely... if you have this OS I think you can cure it by going to
Start->Run and typing "msconfig", clicking "Advanced", and unchecking the bit that has to do with shutting down.

I remember there is some shutdown bugs in Windows98 SE, and there is a fix on M$ website. Don't know where... you need to check it out.

Go to the start button, select Run, type msconfig, click on the advanced tab, uncheck enable quick shutdown. This should help.

Pentium II 233
Windows 98 sec. with shutdown patch installed
64 megs sdram
ATI expert 128 PCI video card
ATX Case.
In the manual it states "Power Button Function"
Set this option to specify the operation of Soft Off by the power button. Select "Suspend" fuction to enter On-Suspend-Off or select "Soft Off" function to enter On-Off operation cycle.

As always, I'm not sure here. But I believe that those options will make a difference in (Win98)?
Pressing the power button will make the computer
A)Initiate the "sleep" procedure. (Turning off the VGA, HDD, ... but keeping the system "almost alive")
B)to shut down with an elegant "CLIC!", causing an ever so stimulating ScanDisk procedure at next boot.
(Is it just me, or does it happend to other people too? Just sitting there, watching the yellow little bar, growing from a tiny little dot in the left corner, to a massive line all across the screen. Knowing that the foolish little program will find nothing wrong, as always...?) http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
