Slow download/browsing speed

Can anyone help me understand why I get slow browsing and especially downloading speed with my US Robotics ext voice modem (56K). I can only get 900b/sec download... On my older laptop I get over 4 K/sec... Laptop:166mhz, 32mb, win95, ie5; desktop:PII 400, 256mb, win98, ie5. I tryied all possible settings I could find on the specialist sites like this... Is it all down to some win98 registry setting that keeps the d/l speed under a certain value?...
All the settings are correct for the modem, COM ports and dial-up connection.
PLEASE HELP!!!

Hi Miglancer, It sounds like your server might be causeing you some problems. I know that in my 5 years of trying this and trying that I have seen that I can get a better conection just by trying another internet server provider. Also the closer you are to the main switching station the better your conection will be, For example if you live out from town 20 to 50 miles from your nearest Ma Bell switching station your conection will not be as good as if you were liveing within 3 to 6 miles of it.
Also there is a number to call for you to test your speeds of your modem I am not sure of it at this time but I am sure that you can find it by trying a surch in yahoo under modem test or what ever.
I don't have that problem anymore because I went to Adelphia Power Link , It's nice but expensive Don't know if I helped you any but maybe something to think about.. Good Luck..

This might sound like a VERY stupid question, but do you run Winamp or something else that uses the Soundcard?
My previous setup caused the modem to slow down to almost zero when Winamp was running.

I have now a different m/b, Win98se (instead of Win98) and new drivers for the soundcard. Working great.

Is fast speed you want? Then get cable, satellite, or DSL. Maybe changing your ISP might be better and also check your modem settings.

I use a utility called iSpeed. I find that it does improve your rates, not drastically, but it does help if you take your time to configure it right. I got it at www.hotfiles.com. (http://www.hotfiles.com.)
