Gotta real stubborn problem.
Installed Win98 SE on a new Abit BE6 Motherboard with a PIII 500 and lost my USB. It shows in device manager, but I can't load any devices. It's like the port isn't even there.
Reloaded the drivers , and still have nothing.
It's not the USB problem that win98SE has eith via chipsets or AMD processors, I have neither with this configuration.
It was there before I reinstalled windows and now it isn't.
If you have any I deas or suggestions, Please let me know.
Thanks,
and happy computing. Ha,hahaha. Till the next problem that is.
Seeya.

Is the USB support enabled in the BIOS settings?

Take a look in the registry you may find that the key below is absent if so this will reenumerate your devices and enable the USB ports
1) Go to Start/Run and type "regedit"

2) In regedit search for a key named: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Detect

3) If the key doesn't exist, go to "Current Version" and create it.

3) Within the "Detect" key, create a String value called "ACPIOption" (without the quotes.) To do this right click choose the Edit menu, and select: New / String value

4) Click on the new entry and give the ACPIOption string the value of 1

5) Reboot, it may start to reenumerate immediately or you may need to go to Start/Settings/Control Panel. Click on
Add New Hardware. Let the PC detect the new plug and play HW. (MS's recommended option)

6) When completed, it will ask to reboot. Reboot the PC and a number of new devices are detected. When it's done installing the new devices, it should ask to reboot again.

7) When you're done rebooting the USB devices should be detected and enabled.
