I have an intel network card that has a 20 MHz crystal on it. What would happen if I replaced that crystal with a 40 MHz crystal. I was reading a post about overclocking 386 and they said a way to do it was to replace a crystal and was wondering if this would have the same effect on my NIC.
I'd start reading here:
http://www.intel.com/network/products/desktop_adapters.htm?iid=netsite+home&
and see what Intel says about their own equipment.
I don't think they would miss the opportunity to sell you a new crystal if what you propose were possible.
I myself haven't heard of overclocking a NIC as they are relatively inexpensive these days. Also, most hubs might not be able to keep up with an over clocked NIC. Then there's the issue of the quality of your LAN wiring which might inhibit speed.
