Local DISC Turns INTO Opens WITH DIALOG

clicking on my local disk C: opens up a OPEN WITH DIALOG. this has been the second time happening to me and the last time i resorted to reinstalling my windows. has this ever happened to anyone? i'm really clueless on this one.

Sounds like a virus or malware to me, I'd be scanning for virii, trojans, spyware, adware, etc. If all else fails, a repair install of windows.

It's a File Association issue....

Go to Kelly's Korner (http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm), scroll down to line 18 and in the right-hand column, click on "Search Opens When Double Clicking A Folder" to download a small .reg file.

After you have the file saved to your hard drive, run it according to the directions at the top of the Kelly's Korner page.

That should fix the problem.

FYI, This quirk is most often caused by opening Explorer or My Computer and clicking on the Tools > Folder Options > File Types > File Folder and selecting "Advanced" then clicking OK instead of Cancel. Even though you have only looked and made no changes, changes will nevertheless be made IF you have selected "Advanced" and IF you then click OK. To avoid this, always click "Cancel" when you don't intend to change things.

As an alternate to the above fix, you can go to Start >Run and type:

regsvr32 /i shell32.dll

Press enter. The effect is immediate with no reboot required.

it turns out to be a usb flash drive virus... i don't recall how i got it but it must of been when people were using their flash drives on my laptop.

this file helped disinfect my computer and fixed it. it's a good thing i don't have to reinstall windows. just FYI for you guys.

Man - you MUST run an updated antivirus program at all times! If you have Service Pack 2, Windows will tell you when your AV program or definitions have expired. If you don't have SP2, you need to get it.

i have windows xp with sp2.... and avg free edition... i guess the free edition isn't good enough... but yeahs... it didnt' pick the virus up for some reason.

i acturally have a purchased version of mcafee but peopel have been telling me even the free version of avg is better then mcafee but i guess it's debatable. yeahh i don't know if these flash viruses are easily detected cause i guess they might be set as hidden files.
