What does adobe flash player actually do?

I found flash [player in control panel when looking to remove a program and found this prog. in a stack of my other adobe progs.
What is it for? I don't recall actually running or using it yet it's there.
Can I remove it without damaging acrobat and photoshop elements for example?

That allows you to view flash content on websites. You can leave it. Once you visit a site that uses flash (there are LOTS), you'll be asked to install it again.
