How much do you have to hate your former boyfriend to tell authorities to leave him stuck in a chimney and let him die? And how drunk do you have to be to wind up there in the first place? Both questions are worth pondering after an incident in Evansville, Indiana Tuesday that involved police, firefighters and a couple at war.
It started at 3:30 in the morning when a very intoxicated Alejandro Valencio decided he wanted another chance with his former girlfriend. So he did what any drunken sot would do - get up on her roof and climb down her chimney. Needless to say, this would-be Santa Claus got stuck on his ill-advised descent.
But when firefighters arrived to get him out, they were forced to call the police - because his former inamorata was trying to stop the rescue efforts. "I told them to leave him in the chimney and let him die," Connie Deweese exclaims. She claims Valencio showed up at her home and she locked all the doors - but that wasn't enough. He "somehow he got to the roof," she notes ruefully.
She's since been charged with disorderly conduct and interfering with a firefighter, but remains unrepentant. "I've dated a lot of psychos in my life, but nobody like that."
And what of the drunken boyfriend? He was treated in hospital and released, and has vowed to help pay for the cost of his rescue. "Everyone do stupid things sometimes when they're drunk," he ventures sheepishly.
Still, there's evidence that Valencio isn't exactly a rocket scientist. The spurned lover actually returned to the scene of his crime after being released from medical care. This time, Deweese opened her door to him - but only to throw a garbage can at him and pelt him with bottles. "Get off my porch," she screamed, "and don't you ever come back here!"
Researchers say there's a fine line between love and hate. And it appears in this case, this is one guy who crossed it.
