I have a desktop which has winXP Pro, and i have a laptop that has winXP Home. I just bought a new mp3 player that allows me to drag and drop entire music folders onto the player. Here's the problem and it's somewhere in my OS:

If i drag and drop a music folder from my desktop (which has all my music stored) my computer copy the music files out of order. They are definitely sorted correctly on my computer, and they also list correctly thru windows explore. The music files has numbers in front of the titles such as:
01 - Wild Thang.mp3
02 - Thank You.mp3
03 - I'm No Angel.mp3
04 - Jealous Guy.mp3
05 - Woman

But when I drag and drop the folder the files began copying over to the device out of order one at a time such as:

copying 03 - I'm No Angel.mp3
copying 04 - Jealous Guy.mp3
copying 01 - Wild Thang.mp3
copying 05 - Woman
copying 02 - Thank You.mp3

And this is how they list and play on the device. But if i drop them from my laptop which has winXP Home, they copy over in the correct order. Both computers are set to arrange by name, and they both list the files correctly on screen.

I had something similar to this problem long ago but i can't remember how i resolved it.......So can someone PLEASE PLEASE help me ASAP!

What happens if you copy em over one at a time in the order you want?

Yes, they maintain the correct order when i drag one at a time. But that's a lot of dragging and i really want this problem fixed.....Do you have the solution?

are both systems using NTFS? I've seen a similar problem on FAT32 when you try to do BARTPE builds

I don't know about the laptop but i do know the desktop (which has the problem) is definitely using FAT32.....

If that's the problem, how do i change over to NTFS?

if you're sure you want to convert the drive, you need to run this from a command prompt:

convert x: /fs:ntfs where x: is the drive letter

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307881

you can't just convert back to FAT32 without a third party tool.

Midknyte, you're a genius.....Thank you so very much, the conversion did work, it solved the problem. I've been searching for the answer to this dilemma for such a long time and no one seemed to know what was going on.

So Again THANK YOU SO VERY VERY MUCH!

Aw c'mon BPB. Give me a little cred. hehe I seriously had some issues with FAT32 and BartPE menu builds. The plugins were all out of order.

Even NTFS will list numerical names first. You'll need to strip the preceding track number if anything.
