Just a few days after AMD announced their new 100 mhz k7 a few days back, Intel lays a smack down. The new Intel 1100mhz Willamette cpu will launch in Dec, a full nine months ahead of schedule. It uses a redesigned .18 micron core, so no more of these old p6 based chips. Is will also have a 1 meg level 2 integrated cache. This is slated as being the "Athlon Killer"

Here's the info: www.theregister.co.uk/991018-000020.html (http://www.theregister.co.uk/991018-000020.html)

Coppermine arrives next week, but still uses the venerable P6 core that first saw the light of day in the Pentium Pro, albeit at a dinky 0.18 micron process, coupled with on die level 2 cache. It'll be faster than existing Pentium IIIs, but not earth-shatteringly so.

Intel is going DOWN! I cant believe this, I wish I had the link to the stats for the Kryotech AMD 800, it outperformed the Intel pIII 1.2giGahzt ill find it and post it l8r. This is just an annoncment so there stock wont plumit, I look at the solid stats. Yes intel WAS the leader, notice they didnt give you any comparisons on the ATHLON and there chip. This is good though im glad intel is finally decided to shape up, MORE POWER BABY |)

so what your telling me is were are gonna basically jump from 600 mhz to 1100 mhz? all I can say is,
ITS ABOUT FREAKIN TIME!!!
we all know they slow down the release rate to keep sales good, but come on, give us a break everyonce and ahwile. I dont know if I will buy one, but I will gladly snag a reduced price 600.

I paraphrased the article, those are not my own opinions. I believe that due to market power, Intel will remain dominate in the cpu market for many years to come. I personally haven't directly owned an Intel cpu in a couple of years, I've been an adament AMD user.

I fully support AMD and their k7. the reason for the k7's faster speed is mainly due to it being run on a modified DEC Alpha EV-6 bus. The k7 does rule as for raw horsepower, but AMD does not have the budget to properly market the chip. Their relying on parternships and "technical" specs to overwhelm the customers. This works for us experienced pc users, but the average home pc user doesn't have a clue what FSB, multiplier, fpu, cache, and etc... mean, and they really don't care. They'll buy a product that has the supposed best name.

Sort of like the nVidia/3dfx debate. For the past two video card generations nVidia has had a better chipset with a more complete 3d feature set. The problem lies in the fact that people recognize the 3dfx name and support it. If your an average customer walking into a store, and you say your interested in a new video card, the salesman will most likely show you a 3dfx v3 and a tnt2. Just by having the time honored words 3dfx, the person assumes a v3 is a superior product.

The same applies for cpu's. Say the customer then wants a new cpu. The salesman offers them a Cyrix, an AMD, and an Intel. Most of the time the person will take the Intel because it is a name that has dominated for years in the pc industry and people associate it to high quality.

That is where we should step in. We informed users should try to educate as many as possible. Instead of the mass population just buying at random, we need to steer the market. On an average day at least a couple of people ask me what computer to buy, or which cpu to get, or; well you get the point. By trying to guide these people in the right direction we could be a dominate force within the market. The next time your neighbor or friend mentions buying a computer, instruct them on the basics and offer to help them. When more informed decisions by better informed people become a reaility, these undermarket companies that sell underpowered and inferior products will start to disappear. Similar to what happened to Cyrix. Enough people spread the word about their cpu shortcommings, and their sales dropped.

I hope AMD pulls out of their slump. They have a superior product as compared to Intel with the k7, but without enough market share, it will drop to the wayside like the k6-3. AMD will always have a place in my desktop, and I hope I can continue that trend, but with Intel's increasing market base and aggressive price scaling policies it leaves me doubting. I'm just impressed that Intel is finally changing from a p6 based cou to a new core design.

Just my .02 worth today /forum/smile.gif

Very well put RobRich. /forum/smile.gif

Intel is hurting and they know it. They have a long road ahead of them. AMD is just laying new tracks. And they are gonna be long when they get done.

Cant wait for this thing! the .18 chips will be out by AMD, there should be overclocker boards around for slot A, Intel releases that big time chip, and AMD will have to drop the prices on the server class AMDs to keep mrket share, considering all that, within about 8 months, I will probably have a 1-1.5 gh system (I will modify my Alpha-Pelitier cooler for Atlon), with a K7, or maybee even a K8!!!

Ahem,

This article is from "The Register", and should be treated as what it is: a techie tabloid; nothing more

No matter how much money they throw at this, they cannot put out a new CPU in such a short ammount of time. Even if they did, according to the SPECfp95 number given, an Athlon 800 would be faster then it anyway. Next time "The Register" should do a little more research on their hoaxes.

Exacly what I said, its just an "announcement" remember it takes brains/research to make a new proccessor in witch money helps but it cant do everything. It's to bad note the ATHLON 800 goes faster than there "ATHLON KILLER" more like the "ATHLON HUMILIATES INTEL" chip. To bad AMD doesnt have INTEL's budjet, at leat we know prices will be coming down BIG TIME cause even if INTEL doesnt release this by december, it sure looks like they are beefing up research. The days have FINALLY come (at least when memory goes back down witch its starting to) were you can buy a GOOD affordable computer. Hell you can get an AMD k6/2-450 for like 90bux now! With a descent video card it runs ALL of todays app's/games just fine (thats what I have). You could put together a descent setup totally from scratch for under 400bux + moniter! The ATHLON 500's are allready down to 200$!

Intel attempts to release the 820 chipset on schedule and falls flat on its face...

Intel pushes the schedule for Willamette forward by 6 months and attempts a release...

Willamette is a new core. The P3 and Coppermine are, at the base level, still pretty much a Pentium Pro with a few more instructions and a different cache architecture. A new core being shoved out the door too fast could be a huge failure. Anyone remember the FDIV bug?

I must agree the TheRegister is the techie tabloid. Take this rumor with a grain of salt the size of Bill Gates's fortune stacked up in pennies.

I personally am an AMD user, hope they keep the pressure up on Intel. Better quality and lower prices, I love it.

Actually there is one thing that I must admit Intel still does have the upper hand on AMD and that is COMPADIBILITY, not saying that AMD isnt compatible with most things, just normally it takes longer to setup and you get more conflictions with AMD mb's. Witch for the money/performance you get is fine by me.

i agree with 800XL. i remeber when the pentium was rushed. what a fiasco. ever since, i've made it policy (at least in theory) that i will never buy a chip till it's been out for at least 3 months. i'd be willing to bet money that the Willamette chip will have a bad bug. if your smart, wait a bit before you buy this chip. it WILL have trouble, being this rushed.
