Hi,

I need some help and I'm sure that loads of you will know the answer and be able to offer some help.

I used to working with Novell, but lately I have been experimenting with NT. Everything seems pretty easy but I am stuck on one point. I can create users OK but assigning home directories is driving me mad. It reckons all you need to do is assign a letter and type a path and this will do everything for you but it doesn't work.

What I've tried is to create a directory called home and share it to everyone. Then assign the home directory for example \\NTPDC\home\bob. But this just maps \\NTPDC\home as the users home directory which is wrong.

I'm sure there are hundreds of people out there who have done this, so could you let me in on the secret.

Also any links to good NT sites would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi

Are you talking about the "User Profile Path" ?

If this is the case, you need to create the directory on your PDC and add the path in the "User Environment Profile" (in User Manager).

For ex.:
\\[your PDC]\profiles\bob

OR:
If you want each users to connect to a specific "home" directory, in the "User Environment Profile", set the letter for the home drive and specify the path: \\[your PDC]\home\bob.
Don't forget to create the dir on the PDC first.

Here's another good NT site for you -
www.jsiinc.com (http://www.jsiinc.com)

There are a great number of useful registry hacks here such as enabling PnP for NT

Another question - did you install NT as a stand-alone server or as a PDC/BDC? (Primary domain controler/Backup Domain Controler) - that might make the difference.

Dumb question, but I did not see anywhere in your post if you had also created the folder bob within the home directory?

I was under the impression the directory structure was only allowed to be in 2 parts, the volume followed by a directory name, so the path would be "\\volume\directory:folder"
while the actual file structure was "volume\path\path....." etc...

Ok, I'm confused a little, so some Novell/NT Server experts...this is for you!
