I recently bought an 8.?Gb Quantum Fireball drive. THe BIOS detects it as mode UDMA 2. Is this correct default? I dont think the drive access/transfer is as fast as it should be. The PC seems to be freezing during some disk access. I think the disk access might be clashing with some other kind of device access, but I cant track it down.
Specs:
Celeron 400 @ 400
128Mb
ABit BH6
SB Live
Quantum Fireball 8.4Gb? and 3.2Gb
Pioneer 40X CDRom
ATI Rage Fury
Monster 2
thanks

I believe UDMA 2 is correct. The BH will autodetect the correct mode for your hard drive. The problem might lie in your other drive (if your boot drive is still the 3.2gig).
For maximum speed I would ghost your 3.2 onto your 8 gig and make it the boot drive(some disk makers send a similiar utility with new drives) assuming the newer drive is in fact faster; then I would put your swap space on the 3.2 gig. If that doesn't help we probably need more info regarding your OS configuration to improve your speed.

Sam

My OS is just Windows 98. My boot drive is the 8.4Gb drive. They both sit on the primary channel. I forgot to mention that I have a Mitsumi T2600 as well as the Pioneer. So
Primary:
Master - 8.4Gb
Slave - 3.2Gb
Secondary:
Master - Pioneer
Slave - Mitsumi

try downloading sandra (diagnostic program) and have it bench your hard drives.
you can get it here: www.sisoftware.demon.co.uk/sandra (http://www.sisoftware.demon.co.uk/sandra)
good luck!
