I have a Dell Optiplex GX1 with 333mhz Pentium Pro and stock toshiba xm 6202b CDRom. As soon as I added the HP CDrw-r drive (slaved to the Toshiba on the secondary IDE port) the system crashed every time it came up. I unplugged the cable to the HP, restarted, shut down and reconnected the cable & it worked until I put a blank cd in the HP drive -crash. I removed all the software instaled for my zip drive & could then recognize the blank cd & copy to it, but if you put a music cd in the Toshiba - Crash! are all HP drives this much of a pain in the ....? Any suggestion to restore music play to the Toshiba? PS- a local Gamer/hacker/pirate laughed at me for buying an HP & said they were famous for crashing. what gives?/

I've seen this problem before, install the Bus Master drivers for your board.

i happen to prefer hps for writing cds. i have yet to have an error on mine. Have you tried updating the drivers for it? that is probably not the answer, but i am really tired right now.

the hp cdrw drives like to be set for MASTER not slave ,i have seen this on multiple hp cdrw drives..... set the cdrom to SLAVE on the primary or secondary port wherever available and try it...

I had a similar problem to this. Fortunately it was only a software problem. I had installed ez cd creator, then nero, then cdrwin, and then the system kept crashing. I read that nero/cdrwin doesn't like it when adaptecs software is installed. I uninstalled all cdr software, and only reinstalled nero and cdrwin. Another good place to find help for the cdr is http://www.cdrom-guide.com/cdrforum.htm BTW I have my 8100 set as secondary slave, and it enjoys it there. Good Luck
Nero hates adaptec software. I had to totally re install windows after i ignored Nero's plea for me to get rid of adaptec

Thanks Running Guy & Wiz-. After I read your messages I looked at the two units I was working on and both had software for Zip drive and Syquest external drives ( not sent to me with the unit). When I deleted the connections out of my System and removed the software, I lost the "crash". Thanks! Add Syquest & Zip drives to your list of CDR-RW conflicts.

Excuse me...The trick to running MULTIPLE types of cd burning software is knowing how to set them up http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif as you can see from the enclosed screenshot
http://www.aros.net/~mntsnow/pics/cdburning.jpg
I have ADAPTEC, NERO and CDRWIN software running on my system and ALL work just fine...The trick is to install them in the correct order...
Install Adaptec
Install Cdrwin
Install Nero
THEN REINSTALL Adaptec over the existing copy http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
ps. Remember to NOT have anything running in the background while installing (also dont be overclocked) and reboot between software installs!
Now you can enjoy all 3 softwares http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

OK mtn snow - You have piqued my interest- what is "nero"??? The name indicates burning is involved, so is this the ultimate cdburning software or simply great in addition to Adaptec's stuff?

To tell you the truth I usuall just use my Adaptec software to do ALL types of burns. When properly configured I have burned cd's that both NERO and CDRWIN are said to be the only ones to be able to. Everyone harps on Adaptec...just like everyone harps about Microsoft...Both work GREAT when updated and configured properly http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif Nero is a fine burning program and has some fancy featurers that make it seem to be a suprior product to some...but in my opionion it's just another burning software..LOL
