having a nightmare!!!

im trying to install an internal cd writer in an external case onto a laptop
i eventually managed to get the system to see it. the system sees software from the drive but when i try to run the copy programs they say there is no media inserted or "drive not ready"
"sense key:02h asc:04h"

can anyone help ??
getting near the point of no return!!!

What kind of CD are you trying to see in the drive - audio or data - if data, is it CD, CDR or CDRW?

Next - is the drive attached through a SCSI or a parallel port on the laptop?? - if SCSI - how is the drive terminated? - is the drive number conflicting with anything else?

If Parallel - you'll need special drivers for it. Doubt if they'd even be available.

Next - have you run an optics cleaning disk through the CD drive to clear the optics on it?

Lastly, what does device manager think about the drive? - Does it show in there? are there any error messages? - are there any IRQ conflicts?
