well I guess this is a tech question, I read some where that a vacuum cleaner near a comp was bad. some thing about the hash from the brushes in the motor. I want to set mine under my desk, will vacuuming next to it cause any harm ?

Never heard that. But I know if you're placing the box on the floor then what you need be most cautious about is banging it, kicking it, chair hitting it, or even a vacuum cleaner impact. Especially when it's turned on and accessing the HD...bump it then and write-off a few hundred clusters permantly from your drive. Or if damage to the head occurs, write-off the HD all together.

But if it's a safe protected spot then should be ok. Next on the list of concerns would be dust/dirt/pet hair. If you have a cat/dog then I wouldn't advise keeping the computer near the floor. But that your judgement call. I think the only harm a vacuum can cause would be physically beating the computer with the vacuum cleaner (and don't act like you've never been tempted to do so).

Bear in mind mig morots in a vacuum, big motors means magnetism, again, not good for hard drives.

In a more spelling orientated view, mig morots means big motors. Don't ask, its late...again...

Although I wouldn't turn a vacuum on and leave standing beside my PC, I have vacuumed near it many times with no ill effects.

I thought about the motors magnetic field for a moment, but you know what? There's hardly a device in your entire house that creates a larger or stronger magnetic & RF field than the computers own monitor. With some basic sensing equipment you can detect a monitor from a block away.

Only thing I ever noticed was that the motion of dragging your vaccum back and forth across the floor tends to create a great deal of static electricity depending on the amount of humidity in the air. Since puters and their components are susceptible to damage from even small unexpected electrical currents, maybe that would be a concern.

Well, don't know how I get away with it but I have my full tower on the carpeted floor, open case, in a house with 2 cats & 2 dogs. Case top is padded & used as a footstool, so movement & jarring is every day thing.
Been this way for years.

Also, I wouldn't plug the vacuum into the same jack as your PC/surge protector. The instant current draw could spike the PC or powerstrip. You see how lights flicker when you fire it up, right?

well depending on your computer, one probably sucks more than the other. in my case the vacuums does, but on my parent's compaq, i could clean the entire united states with the suckiness this computer is endowed with. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Like most, your vacuum uses a 2 prong plug. This means any static electricity isn't carried away.If the vacuum touches any bare metal on your case,it gets zapped. You can vacuum close to it,but don't touch it.....DawgTuff.

Thanks Guys, Ill just rake up the straw and put in gravel. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
Seriously, as the comp is grounded thru the plug. and I can walk across the room and draw a static charge, think I will just stay a bit away from the box and always have it off when vacuuming. I will so instruct my maid http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
