How hard is it to get drivers for proprietary boards such as Compaq, Dell and Gateway, etc.

These drivers are on the company's indivial install disks but I am not familiar with the availability elsewhere. I realize these boards are made by other companies other than the computer brand so....I am asking because I am looking at some replacement boards on Ebay and wish to know where to look for such drivers....thanks in advance

Normally you would search by the hardware vendor themselves first. If it's a VIA chipset board, the to go the VIA site and get the 4in1 drivers. If it's an intel board, go to intel's site. etc etc.

a lot of onboard sound are realtek chips now.

use unknown device identifier to figure out what's what.
