I was asked to look at a small, 2 computer network that seem to stop functioning. Networking, however is my weakest skill but a 2 computer network should be slam -dunk. It seems not to be.
The setup is using an Actiontec modem/router that is contected to the DSL line. I believe the main computer is attached using the USB port on the Actiontec modem/router using DHCP and connects to the Internet just fine. It (the Actiontec) has a wireless connection setup for the remote computer whcih seems to have a strong signal.
However, the remote computer cannot see the Workgroup nor the Internet. The main computer cannot see the remote computer. The Workgroup is the same on both computers and the security code is keyed into the remote.
Here is the strange part. The Ethernet port of the Actiontec runs to the Ethernet Port of a Linksys WRT54GS wireless router also attached. They use this only to network a printer. Strange.
They told me the GEEK Squad set it up this way.
It seems to me the WRT54GS should be replaced by a switch, either that or disable DHCP on the WRT54GS, eliminate the USB connections and only use Ethernet/wireless to accomplish this small network. It should then work fine.
My basic question is do the two routers fight each other? Does my solution seem correct? I have set up many multiple computer networks but none have used two routers.
