I have a diamond 56k external V.90 modem and can get connections speeds of about 50kbps. a friend of mine has a 56k pace internal and, when connected to the internet, the connection icon says that he is connected at 115kbps!. How is this possible? is it possible to connect at this speed with my modem?

your help would be much appreciated

115kbps isnt the speed of the modem.
Its the speed of the Com-port.
Its driver related. Some drivers ,
my Askey drivers for ex. reports
115kbps.

So , 115kbps with a modem ,
sadly bad true - Not a chance.

You could try contacting your phone company and asking them to widen the band width on your line, worked for me, got from 43k to 49.9k

i wish i could speed up my own 56k modem.i am really tired of my 2.3k/sec download rates no matter what i do. just about the only good thing about my parents' compaq (have wish i could compaqt in a trash compactor, because that is just what it is is, trash) is the cable modem. now i am starting to get realistic download rates here.

Actual speed depends on condition of your phone line. If there is some wheree a bad connection, speed will go down.
