Win98 Travis OuTpaTienT 01-11-2000, 04:31 PM hmmmm, can't you just do this: Start Windoze, go into display properties/screensavers, and click on "change password". It doesn't seem to ask for the old password, it just let's you assign a new password which will then overwrite the old (forgotten) password. user0005 01-11-2000, 08:21 PM If nothing works, just a bat or hammer. You know what to do from here... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif narayan 01-11-2000, 09:41 PM Or you could remove the battery and that will clear your passworssds. you may have to leave it out for 10 minutes or so. hope this helps. TCHILES 01-12-2000, 03:40 AM I must enter old password in order to change new password. To remove the battery would clear the system password????. I think I need to go into regedit and remove it??? HELP OuTpaTienT 01-12-2000, 04:37 AM Well, help us help you by providing a little more info. Is it a "stock" Windoze screensaver? Is it regular ol'Windoze 98? I have '98 and just changed my screensaver password, twice, and it does not ask for the old password. Is this some non-MS screensaver? Donkey 01-12-2000, 06:52 AM Doesn't win98 store all the paswords and stuff in a username.pwl file like it did in 95. Deleting this file will remove all passwords, including the one for your username and so deleting the user, last resort i suppose. But i don't know if you can actually look inside the file for the info you need. BC 01-12-2000, 06:55 AM Very simple..... I had to do this myself. Go into regedit and do a search for the words that come up when you need to type in your ss password. I think it is "please enter your pASSword" then you will see a string in the same place that contains your password just delete all the stuff in that string. I used this when I needed on a pc here and someone kept putting that **** password on so I deleted the whole srting now you can put a password in but you never have to key that password when the ss starts. BC 01-12-2000, 07:01 AM Remove the battery thats a good one. You were joking right? BC 01-12-2000, 07:02 AM dp [This message has been edited by BC (edited 01-12-2000).] LostUser 01-12-2000, 07:08 AM I really am surprised that no-one has come up with a decent answer for your question. Normally the people on this board are red-hot. Removing the battery is a joke I think! The screensaver password is stored in the registry. To find it, open the registry. Goto HKEY_CURRENT_USER, Control Panel, Desktop. Under there you should have a key called Screensave_data which holds the password in an encrypted format. The encryption is pretty weak and can easily be cracked. There are loads of utils out there that will do it. I've got one here somewhere. Hope that helps. LostUser 01-12-2000, 07:09 AM Sorry I forgot to mention, you could just delete the Screensave_data key and this should remove the password. narayan 01-12-2000, 07:16 AM sorry my bad. (embarassment sets in) I will not try to come up with an excuse although it was way past my bedtime and I just got home from the bar and my cat was clawing my leg as I was typing. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif BC 01-12-2000, 07:26 AM ahh thanks Lost I forgot the where it was exactly. I did know the where abouts though. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif Sorry I thought you were joking. Really. narayan 01-12-2000, 07:36 AM just dont tell anyone http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif I lost a CMOS pass once and that's what I ended up doing and then I got confused. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif [This message has been edited by narayan (edited 01-12-2000).] OuTpaTienT 01-12-2000, 07:55 AM lol. Not only did narayan embarrass himself but we've been showed up by a junior member. hehe. BTW, good job LostUser. See, we need the assistance of everyone, no matter what adjective preceeds your member (even if you're adjectiveless like me). http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif SysOpt.com
