I am building my first computer and I could
use some help. The motherboard is a FIC VA-503+ with a k6-2 400 processor. I have 96 mb of RAM (SIMM). I have gotten to the setup screen and but after it recognizes the hard
drive (Maxtor 13.6) and CD ROM (40x), I get
a "floppy drive fail (40) message so that I can't continue and install Windows 98. I have checked and rechecked the cable and electric connections. Is there a jumper I should check regarding the floppy drive? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

I don't recall a jumper on the FIC board you need to set, but you might want to check your bios settings to see if there is an option to enable/disable the floppy drive.

If your really itching to get it up and running, disconnect the floppy cable, change the boot sequence to Cd-Rom/C Drive. Boot with the CD in the drive. Note that some bios'es don't support this but you could be up and running and deal with the floppy problem later thru windows.

Edit- I mean just deal with the floppy problem after you have windows loaded, it's obviously a floppy drive, bios, or cable problem.

Check to see that the floppy is connected to the cable after the twist in the cable.

Is the light staying on on the front of the floopy drive all the time? is so then the cable is in the wrong way round.
Just a thought
