98% of the modems on the planet use a rockwell chipset - so that doesn't do a lot to describe who made/marketed the modem. -

Find the box/manual or an FCC ID number and let us know who made the thing - then, perhaps someone here will have or can find a set of AT commands which will match your desire to turn down the dial tone.

Not to worry - 99% of rockwell chipset modems use standard HAYES command set stuff for their init strings. - chances are there's a command to tone down the volume on that modem as well.

ANDY,

Put a couple pieces of masking tape over the speaker on the modem. It works wonders. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

There are several init strings that will fix the problem.

I have a Rockwell chipset PCI 56K modem in a AMD K62 500 and I cannot adjust the volume, I turn the volume down in the properties in the device manager and modem icon in the control panel. Sometimes the volume will reduce for a day or so, then right back up to max (earsplitting when it dials up) Any suggestions, besides buying a real modem (thinking about it)?

Thanx, tape was simplest, and finally most effective, ISP provided dialup settings (program) rewrite INIT strings.
