At least one thing appears to have gone right today, I plugged up this free Hayes Accura External 28.8/v34 and it reads out 115,200. My usual on the others is 14,400-28,800. Thinking of a misread, I go to Windows Update and it loads fast, the download of 682k took 5min 3sec instead of the projected 8 min @28,800. And the transmission was interrupted many times to boot. So is this normal, is electricity coming to the backwoods, in this case is my isp teasing me with something new? I've been too long without sleep as you can tell.. gnite world, Dr

The high speed is the connection between the computer and the modem. The 115,200 is the comm speed from your port to the modem.

With regards to previous performance...
While using external modems you should set the port speed as high as possible. The modem modulates and compresses all of the data before it ie sent from your computer. Likewise it demodulates and uncompresses data before is is sent to your computer. After reciveving info and translating into data, the modem may have more than 28.8baud worth of data, but if you computer is only listening at 28baud the connection is slowed.

Hope this helps,
Banti

Thanks for the feedback banti, some other isp's I checked with this modem on the same machine showed, 19,200, 26,400 and 28,800. These were free isp's. My pay provider still shows the fast connection. I know it is impossible to get above 53,000 or so with dial up, but this connection really rocks. At microsoft I normally show about 2k/sec this one shows 4-5k/sec. I only wish I had the one like at work that averages 50k/sec, must be t1? Oh, well, it's working anyway, thanks for the info, all is welcome.. sincerely DrVette

We have a bunch of hayes modems at work. Since they went out of business, we buy USR. We only allow external modems on our PC's that use modems.

The Hayes allways seem to connect much better than the USR's. I get better performance from an Accura 288 v.34 than a v.91 56K USR, on the same PC, same line!

Seems like the good ones never last... Hayes is now dead!
