My system displays an erro at the time the screensaver is to be displayed.
ssmyst.scr-DLL Initilization Failed
Initilization of the dynamic link library C:\WINNT\system32\user32.dll failed.Process is terminating abnormally.
The system had WINNT 4.6 for a OS. Previously the system program was cleared and rebooted and worked fine for about a day. What causes this?

There are a number of things which can cause a file to go bad.

Most typically, it's a fragmented hard drive.
if you're in windows 9X at the moment, a scandisk and defrag will help, but may not fix the problem file.
If you're still on NT, a chkdsk may help, or you might need to download diskeeper lite from executive software and defrag your drive.

another cause might be a virus is working it's way through your system - update your definitions ( norton just posted new ones this morning ) and sweep your system. Again - it's unlikely this will fix the problem, but may repair the cause.

Another cause is user error - that's typically a problem between the keyboard and the chair which we can't access online directly, but we can point in the correct direction - hehehe - sometimes nothing can be done.....

You might also have hard drive damaged sectors - the fore-mentioned scandisk operation will identify this and keep anything else from writing there, but the file's gone.

You might try re-running set-up and getting that file back, but sometimes this creates more problems than it solves.

You could always post exactly what version of your OS you have <help> <about> and someone out here can search their system for the file and mail it to you.

Here's a question - have you tried selecting another screen-saver? - Does it give you the same error?

Sorry about the humor - I'm on my 3rd litre of Mnt Dew and the caffine is starting to get to me.....

Okay - perhaps it's just been a long week, but you lost me there on the OS version -

4.6?? - 4.6 what? -

Also - I'd be real worried about the norton message - looks like hard drive damage from here.....

Are you perhaps running NT workstation - I'm not sure what RVL it's at -

Are you maybe on an NTFS file system and norton possibly can't read it??

Let me know

I have tried a couple of different screensavers and downloaded a saver and tried that one with the same results.
My OS is 4.6, I previously had 4.7 when the problems started. I noticed this problem started after I upgraded Real Player G2 to Real Player 7.0 Basic. THis situation also arose about a year ago, I wonder if it is time to try windows 98.When the error occurs and I click "OK" to bypass it I have to log back inot my system.
Earlier when I tried to scan my drives norton said it was unable to read record on each drive??????????????????????/

Thanks for the help. What appears to have corrected the problem is deleting my profile and creating a new one.
